Part time jobs - trainings
The training offered at a part time job depends on several facts: in some cases, part time employees will be limited to basic positions because the company may not want to invest in extensive training; in other cases, employers offer more options and flexibility, because they hope to attract long-term full time employees. In fact, with a full time job, when another position opens up in a company, current employees are encouraged to apply, and thus can move up through the ranks.
Part time jobs : a mainstay of student life
-How many hours a student should work? There is a range of opinions on this: often the figure of 16 hours a week is mentioned, so a part time job is the best. But in reality, what is suitable for you will depend on your circumstances - a history student with 10 hours of formal classes a week might be able to undertake paid work more than a medical student with 35.
What is true is that research has shown that there is a correlation between a high number of hours worked and the likelihood that you will end up with a lower degree classification, so you should be careful about balancing work with your studies, even a part time job.
-When should you work? Night shifts might pay better but they can have a deleterious effect on your coursework. You can take a full-time job as a night porter in a local hotel at the start of the year and then stop attending classes after about week two and moreover don’t pass that year.
-What kind of work? In an ideal world, students would be able to find part time jobs in areas that are relevant to their future careers or, at least, that pay well. But this is not always easy and most students are still to be found in low-paid and low-skilled part time jobs in catering and retail.
